A History of Empowerment
THE ORIGIN OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the idea of historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans.
President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month during the celebration of the United States Bicentennial in 1976.
“In celebrating Black History Month,” Ford said in his message, “we can seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Many other countries around the world also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
Every year a theme for Black History Month is chosen by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, and this year's theme is The Black Family: Representation, Identify, and Diversity.
THE MACE® BRAND STORY OF EMPOWERMENT
Keeping you and your family safe is a driving force for us. Mace Brand began with the invention of a chemical compound in 1965, which later evolved into pepper spray in the 1980s. We’re best known for our flagship product - Mace Brand pepper spray.
