5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day Every Day
How will you celebrate Earth Day? Earth Day is the largest secular (non-religious) holiday in the world. It began in 1970, and now is celebrated by over a billion people in 192 countries. Earth Day takes place on April 22, 2021.
In honor of this special day, Mace® Brand has put together a list of 5 ways to celebrate Earth Day today, and every other day of the year as well, with some helpful sustainability tips.
REDUCE YOUR PLASTIC USAGE
It's probably not a surprise to know plastic pollution is one of the most critical environmental problems our Earth faces right now. The problem with plastic is that much of it cannot be recycled, and it ends up in a landfill or one of the world's oceans.
So what can you do? Avoid single-use plastics and go with glass or paper. Glass products are easily reused and paper is easily recycled and is much friendlier on the environment. Take your own recyclable shopping bags to the grocery store or choose paper bags if given a choice at checkout. Then recycle those paper bags.
PICK UP SOME TRASH
It's not hard to do, and it all adds up. Picking up a dozen pieces of trash will usually take only a few minutes. In addition to be being ugly, trash poses a threat to wildlife. Plus trash can end up in our waterways and eventually make it to our oceans. Be sure to use a biodegradable trash bag for your trash.
PLANT A TREE
It's simple, fun, and one of the best and most affordable ways to positively impact our Earth's environment. Trees produce oxygen, and also absorb carbon dioxide from the air. Trees provide habit for wildlife and help reduce surface water runoff from storms. Plus trees provide shade, which can help to cool the land, air, and water.
SWITCH TO A REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE
Plastic water bottles end up in landfills at a growing rate each year. Some estimates put the number at 30 million, and only about 30% of plastic water bottles ever get recycled. 60 million plastic water bottles are used every day in the United States.
Bottom line: The production and disposal of plastic water bottles has a negative impact on the Earth's resources, the size of our landfills, and can impact the level of pollution in every body of water on the planet.
ADD SOMETHING GREEN TO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE
Go ahead and challenge yourself to add a "green act" to your daily routine. Try reducing your water usage by taking a shorter shower. Take a bike ride or walk instead of driving or getting a ride share. Only switch the lights on in the room you are in. Every little step counts toward making our planet a healthier, more sustainable world.
Just as you should focus on personal safety each day, Earth Day shouldn't be just one day of raising awareness and acting to protect the environment.
